Bathing Beauties
RLSS Boathouse + Cafe, Chapel St Leonards, 2006
Competition
The design for the new restaurant and boathouse was inspired by the endless horizontal landscapes and ‘big skies’ of Chapel St Leonards. The new building stretches out across the existing plateau facing the open sea.
The building is split into two which forms a sheltered public courtyard between the restaurant and the RLSS Boathouse. The two forms are united under a continuous roof, overhanging to provide shelter and shade. The accessible roof deck slopes from the dunes down towards the sea providing spectacular views across the vast flat surrounding landscape. The deck thins towards the edges and dissolves into the surrounding landscape.
