Bexhill
Shelters + Kiosk, Bexhill-on-Sea, 2009
marine grade stainless steel, stained timber
Competition
The shelters are inspired by the memorial benches along the seafront at Bexhill. Each bench has its own story and is invested with different meaning by every person who chooses to sit on it.
Envisioned as a cluster of stainless steel shelters, each shelter has its own special characteristics. Dotted along the promenade, each provides a welcoming resting/meeting point:
-
- Some simply provide a perch to shelter from the prevailing winds. Others invite visitors to climb within them.
-
- Some frame sea views, others celebrate the horizontality of the promenade.
-
- Some are huddled together as though in conversation. Others are spread out and singular, alone.
-
- Some offer a small family a place to picnic, others simply a gateway to the promenade from the town.
-
- Ultimately, they are social havens that encourage visitors and locals to find their favourite, somewhere to meet up or a setting for a chance encounter in a place of beauty.
