Streatham Tate

Library + Community facilities, London, 2005
£5-7,000,000

In 2005 studio octopi won an invited tender to undertake a feasibility study for the redevelopment of Streatham Tate library. A brief for the new library, community facilities and residential cross-subsidy was developed through consultation with the capital projects officer at Streatham Town Centre Office, Lambeth Libraries and local councillors.

The aim of the feasibility study was to evaluate the potential development of the existing buildings and site. Our proposals were structured around two alternative approaches; complete demolition of the existing site versus refurbishment and extension of the existing buildings. The study evaluated the potential mix of uses in relationship to the existing streetscape, mediating between the high street along Streatham High Road and the existing residential housing along Pinfold Road.

The library was to create a new focal point on the high street with greater visual connection between the street and the library.
